On the horizon 

Since moving back from New Orleans, I've readjusted to the hustle and bustle of big city living. In New York, world renowned cultural institutions or cuisines from all continents can seemingly be found on every corner. If you've lived in or spent considerable time here, you understand full well the hold New York City has on its residents and admirers. As fulfilled as I am reviling in the enriching experiences that abound in New York City, I hope to travel more in the future.

When wanderlust overcame me in the past, I'd journey to cities like Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, or San Antonio. Though I'm touring less than I have in previous years, there are cities I truly adore and others I've always dreamed of seeing. You may be aware that I've toured Boston dozens of times. From fascinating historical landmarks to breathtaking harbor views, Boston always lures me back. I'm Boston bound again and I'm brimming with joy at the thought of what all I'll get up to! Next month, from Monday March 10th through Wednesday the 12th, I'll be staying near Downtown Boston. Metropolitan Museum Date

February 2025 has been fascinating and eventful. Despite attempted erasure, February is still Black History Month. I've always been an avid appreciator of history. When I was younger, I'd read ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian mythology at length. In history class, I'd intently listen to lessons, especially those about Precolonial Africa or the Early Americas. As often as I can carve out time to wander the halls of museums, I make sure to make the most of every revelatory moment to celebrate the vastness and diversity of human history. Because of my unwavering understanding of the ways in which the past is interconnected with and informs the present, I hold institutions dedicated to archiving and preserving history in high esteem.

Since you also value being a lifelong learner and seizing opportunities to deepen your historical and cultural influences, here's an exhibition you may find to be thought-provoking. Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876-Now is on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. On an ongoing basis, tens of thousands of objects from Ancient Egypt can be seen in various galleries at The Met. What intrigues me about Flight Into Egypt is the interpretive lens through which Ancient Egyptian iconography is viewed. Rather than showcasing ancient artifacts, more modern works by Black artists from the late nineteenth century through today are the focus. From the album covers of musicians such as Miles Davis, Erykah Badu, and Alice Coltrane, to paintings by Sam Gilliam and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Flight Into Egypt is an immersive multimedia experience.

Vogue Arabia November 2017

Anti-Valentine's Series at Spectacle

David Lynch left an indelible mark on American cinema. A few New York City arthouse and independent theaters are commemorating Lynch with screenings of his mind-bending surrealist films. MULHOLLAND DR. is a movie one must see again and again and again. This "love story in the city of dreams" is what made me aware of David Lynch's mastery. Each rewatching leaves me in awe. Luckily, IFC Center has added additional screenings to their previously sold out dates.

Black Burlesque 

Valentine's Day presents an abundance of moments to enjoy erotic experiences. Creating Space

Since Spring, I've mostly been in New York with a few trips elsewhere on the East Coast as well as a brief visit to Chicago. During my lengthy hiatus, and again during my shorter break early this year, I've carved out space to focus more on the creative pursuits and advocacy I felt called to do within arts, cultural, or non-profit spheres. The opportunities I had to learn and connect with aligned people were invaluable.

In addition to freelancing, I made sure to find moments of ease and prioritize my wellness in the ways I could. Going for long walks has been grounding. The High Line is one of my favorite haunts. When walking up and down the full length, from the Meatpacking District to Midtown, I get to take in Manhattan's phenomenal architecture and public art. When it gets warmer again, I want to venture further north and hike some of the magnificent Hudson Valley trails.

Dancing, sometimes for hours on end, to House and Techno and Cumbia and Reggae has been soul soothing. Movement and music have always brought me back to myself regardless of whatever else might be going on in my life. Speaking of the profoundly restorative power of music, this Summer I had my second chance to see an artist I cherish dearly. Kelela's angelic voice pierces my heart and leaves me more enchanted each time I hear her.

Besides seeing live music, going out dancing, and taking up urban hiking, I've also been cultivating previously held skills. Engaging in architectural and landscape photography has brought me joy. In the future I may post some of my favorite photographs I've captured with my mirrorless camera. Reintroducing Lena Duvall
